Britain and France occupied the vacuum created by the downfall of Turkey. Iraq and later a partitioned Palestine-Israel, and Syria with Lebanon, emerged from the rule of London and Paris. Self-assertion in Iran and then Egypt, evoked unsuccessful British and French collusion with Israel against the changing.

Course aim

This course explores the region from 1918 to 1956 including the Second World War and the Suez conflict.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the past roles of British and French colonialism in the Middle East.
  • Appreciate roots of pan-Arab and radical left and right ideologies.
  • Explain aspects of the second world war, with surprising alliances.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
