The Modernist City is a literature course that aims to introduce students to a range of inter-war texts emerging from key cultural capitals of the world in the early 20th century. We will be studying Anglophone native and expatriate novelists such as John Dos Passos, Gertrude Stein, Christopher Isherwood, and Patrick Hamilton in order to reflect on the qualities of social and cultural life in New York, Paris, Berlin, and London between 1920 and 1950.

Course aim

This course aims to introduce students to a range of inter-war texts emerging from key cultural capitals of the world in the early 20th century in order to reflect on the qualities of social and cultural life in New York, Paris, Berlin, and London.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the political and social contexts informing the novels.
  • Identify the themes and styles emerging from the different texts.
  • Develop a broader awareness of literary modernism.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • A copy of the set texts
