Victorian Britain experienced a significant social, economic, and political transformation. This course is an overview of the most important ideas, beliefs and assumptions that governed the Victorian worldview. It is about how Victorians interpreted these dramatic changes, how their ideas could challenge cherished beliefs, and could help find answers to pressing issues of the day.Topics include the Victorian social conscience, science and society, free trade, religion, and Victorian feminism.

Course aim

This course is an overview of the most important ideas, beliefs and assumptions that governed the Victorian worldview

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To give an account of the underlying ideas and beliefs of the Victorian era
  • To evaluate the impact of scientific, sociological, political, economic, and religious ideas on Victorian culture and society
  • To identify the key ideas concerning the Victorian worldview in contemporary sources

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
