Workshop of the World: A Social History of Nineteenth-Century Britain 1815-1914

The hotly debated 'Condition of England' question was a phrase used by contemporaries to describe the challenging social issues of the day that confronted Victorians in their rapidly industrialising world. The course will provide an introduction to the important social issues of nineteenth century including, public heath, charity and philanthropy, education, poverty, women's rights, and the development of the welfare state.

Course aim

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the key issues in British social history in the nineteenth century.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To evaluate the impact of the key social issues that affected British society in the nineteenth century.
  • To identify the factors that led to the increased intervention of the state as a solution to the social problems in nineteenth-century Britain
  • To identify the underlying ideas which proposed and opposed social reform in Britain, 1815-1914.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
