This course focuses on Economic History and look at the major economic events of the last century and the ways in which economists have explained and interpreted them. What is the economic theory behind the Russian Revolution and why did economic planning fail against the capitalist economies of the west? What caused the great depression and what impact did it have on the economy and people? What economic changes were needed to meet the requirements of the second world war and how did the aftermath of war affect the global economy? What is globalisation and how has it affected our own economy? Which economists have been the key drivers of economic change over the last century and how well have their theories endured?

Course aim

This course focuses on Economic History and looks at the major economic events of the last century along with the ways in which economists have explained and interpreted them.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Assess the way in which economic theory has evolved over the last century.
  • Recognise how the work of specific economists has influenced government policy.
  • Determine the causes of a number of major economic events over the last century.
  • Analyse the relevance of economic history in current economic policy-making.
  • Evaluate the relevance of economic theory in the formulation of economic policy.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
