We will consider the modern performances by those to seek to recapture the variety of music and dance from the tavern, the open air, the back gallery of the chapel, the concert hall. and also the tradition as it emerges abroad in Europe, the caribbean and America.

Course aim

A course that embraces the secular and sacred traditions of music for the winter period as remembered and recreated by traditional musicians

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • explore the subject through the perspective of the overall theme and develop new insights into the ideas and situations of this popular music making
  • define and broaden our horizon through the understanding of the culture that embraced this music making
  • explain the social purpose of this music making both in its original time and in its revival in the 21st century
  • engage and participate in the learning community
  • gain confidence and the skills to understand and discuss how the music contributed to the culture of the time and why it is so popular today

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
