Literary Paris

This course will introduce students to a broad range of autobiographical, biographical, and fictive texts by expatriate writers living in Paris at the turn of the 20th century. We will be considering the lives and social circles of writers such as Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, George Orwell, Djuna Barnes, and Jean Rhys as well as considering the political and cultural influence of Paris on their literary works.

Course aim

This course will introduce students to a broad range of autobiographical, biographical, and fictive texts by expatriate writers living in Paris at the turn of the 20th century.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a familiarity with Parisian culture in the early 20th century
  • Identify key themes and literary styles in the set texts
  • Develop an understanding of the writers' lives and social circles

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • A copy of the set texts
