Russian Music 2 takes us from the end of WW1 to the present day and traces how because, or despite the influence of the Soviets, three major composers dominate the period - Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich.

Course aim

Russian music 2 is a study of the music post WW1 and examines both the Russian characteristics of the music,the inheritance of Western European classical music traditions and the influence of Soviet politics on the composers' output.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • explore and discuss the subject area through the perspective of classical traditions, modern innovation and the ideals of the soviets - achieved or ignored by three giants of symphonic music.
  • broaden the horizon of the listener through the understanding of the culture which begat these giants of modern symphonism and demonstrate this through discussion
  • explain the varied social purpose of the works and discover is this is relevant to the 21st century
  • engage and discuss with the learning community
  • have confidence and understanding and the skills needed to understand and discuss how music contributed to national culture and how this music contributes to our concert going today

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
