The Wildlife Habits of Northamptonshire

This course will look at the flora and fauna of wildlife habitats in Northamptonshire, including ancient woodlands, hedgerows, wildflower grasslands, wetlands and old quarries. We will look at how nature is faring in the county, study the historical development of these habitats and look at the the issues surrounding their conservation.

Course aim

To enable people to study the main habitats in Northamptonshire where nature can still be found, to look at how these habitats have developed over time, to examine the reasons why some have declined and the issues surrounding their conservation.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the main features and dominant species of at least three wildlife habitats in Northamptonshire from the following list: ancient woodland, species-rich grassland, marshes/fens, flooded gravel pits, old quarries and arable land.
  • Describe the main reasons for the decline of species-rich, wildflower grassland over the last 70 years.
  • Describe how ancient woodland was traditionally managed.
  • Describe and explain some of the main changes in the English countryside over the last 70 years.
  • Evaluate more critically media and other coverage of issues surrounding nature and conservation issues.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students should note each week references to nature or conservation in the media and bring the key points to each session for discussion. Sharing of photography, digital and non-digital will also be encouraged. Students will also be asked to make observations of nature in their gardens & locality

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • The tutor will not keep individual files but will keep a record of class progress and activities.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring paper and pen to make notes with. Internet access will be useful but not essential.

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
