From Belief to Doubt :   A consideration of how  religious ,political  , scientific  and cultural  developments both influenced and were influenced by this change. Using the ideas of the French revolution as a jumping off point  the emphasis will be on the roots of the religious and ethical shifts in politics and attitudes as the modern UK  becomes multicultural. .  Resources will include novels, biography, diaries and selected historical and scientific texts.

Course aim

From Belief to Doubt :  historical and cultural background to religious changes as strong and unified belief is affected by scientific and philosophical opinions and discoveries.  

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify some of the historical and sociological origins of 0t mankind's belief in Gods and a God
  • Be aware of a number of scientific and philosophic arguments for and against religious belief
  • Appreciate the contribution of religion to art , music and painting
  • discuss these issues and give a personal point of view .

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • however a book list is provided for background knowledge and it will be helpful to read the books selected for specific classes.
