A course for nurses moving to the UK from abroad, or anyone with English as a second language looking to work in a hospital or other care environment. This course will help you adapt both in work and socially. Together we will look at issues you have faced since moving to the UK and how you can overcome. You will share real life experiences in a safe space, and find solutions to the issues which you may be facing.This will be an informal and welcoming educational environment which will support you to thrive in the UK.

Course aim

A second language course aimed at people employed in a hospital environment to assist with common work and social issues.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Students need a level 2 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Students will develop specific language skills linked to a care setting including; exploring concerns, assessing well being and providing reassurance.
  • Students will develop language skills in tone and register that help understanding.
  • Students will develop an understanding of cultural differences in non verbal communication, and explore how difficulties can be overcome.
  • Students will develop language skills linked to cultural issues that will provide confidence in the workplace and social settings.
  • Students will gain confidence in expressing issues that are faced in moving abroad and discuss ideas on how this can be overcome.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
