The class is open to anyone who has always wanted to try their hand at Pottery. We will go through some basic techniques, with a view to beginning a 10 week course in September. Pottery is a great way to relax and learn a new creative skill, meet new people and share ideas in a friendly, fun and relaxed environment. All materials are provided, please bring an apron if you have one, or wear old clothing.

Course aim

This course will provide a brief introduction to working with clay and the different techniques used to produce a piece of work. Also a brief introduction to different glazing techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Prepare clay
  • Start to use hand building techniques
  • Slab, coil and pinch pots
  • Start to recognise glazing techniques
  • Start to identify firing processes

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Please bring along an apron if you have one, or wear old clothing.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • This could lead to beginning a 10 week course in September if there is enough interest.
