Introduction to Driving Theory

Ref: C3843168

Come along and find out about the driving theory test and what you need to learn to pass it.

Course aim

This course aims to give students an understanding of the main requirements of the driving theory test. IMPORTANT - This course alone will not be sufficient for students to pass the theory test. Further individual study will be necessary.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Students need to have English at Entry 2 minimum and basic internet skills ( eg internet search)

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the colours and symbols used in road signs and correctly identify at least 4 examples
  • Define the meaning of hazard awareness and successfully identify a developing hazard from a film clip
  • Identify four types of vulnerable road users and describe the extra care you would take.
  • Describe the different elements of the driving theory test and give examples.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Some classes may include trips outside of the classroom to find road signs/markings or observe traffic behaviour.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A copy of the most recent Highway Code would be useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Students may feel more confident to continue studying for their theory test , apply for their provisional licence and start driving lessons. Having a driving licence could lead to greater independence and increased job opportunities.
