Introduction to teaching adults in the community - Pathways taster

This taster will introduce new tutors to teaching adults in the community. Students will explore the importance of starting points and icebreakers. Students will also identify motivations of adults to take up learning and recognise the importance of a variety of teaching and learning methods to suit learning styles.

Course aim

To introduce students to teaching adults in the community and how adults learn

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This taster is suitable for new tutors or those wishing to move into teaching adults

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise how to make a group feel comfortable
  • Identify what motivates adults to attend or not attend courses in the community
  • Identify 2 learning styles

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, working in pairs, class discussions, short tasks

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Progress to another WEA course in the Teaching and Training Adults Pathway
