Learn to Run/Walking Group

Couch to 5k running programme/walking group for improved physical & mental health. This course is suitable for everyone with a basic level of fitness. If in any doubt, consult your GP first.

Course aim

The running element is for complete beginners & also a walking element to ensure that less able students are able to join in at their own level & feel the benefits that physical exercise can bring, especially in relation to mental health.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for students who attend a specific centre only. For more information please call 0300 303 3464
  • The course is for Happy Mums participants. Students need a basic starting fitness level of being able to walk 2 miles.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Run or walk for 30 minutes/5k
  • List the benefits of physical exercise on mental health
  • Make a personal plan to fit exercise into your family routine

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Demo, discuss, do will be used for the practical elements of this course There will be class discussion on a range of health issues 2 sessions of home study will be required each week

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Feedback will be verbal, positive & on going. there will also be peer & self reflection.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • If in any doubt in relation to any medical conditions, discuss with your GP Please wear suitable sports clothes & trainers Bring bottled water is required Pushchairs can be brought to the sessions

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading or pre course work is required unless you need to consult with your GP.
