L1 Community Interpreting Initial Assessment

Students wishing to join a Community Interpreting course need to complete an initial assessment before they start. The initial assessment event is designed to test students’ current English skills. During initial assessment, students will work with WEA staff to agree the current level that they are working at and discuss the best course available for them to develop their skills.

Course aim

This is not a course. It is an initial assessment for Community Interpreting. At the end of the assessment you will know if you have met the entry requirements to enable you to start the course.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify my levels of literacy
  • Know which course is best for me
  • Enrol on a WEA Community Interpreting course if one is available

How will I be taught?

  • Literacy levels will be assessed during the session

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Access onto L1 accredited course

  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2018
