Using Watercolours and Acrylics in Landscape Painting

This is suitable for people of all abilities with a willingness to try different techniques and media to observe and capture aspects taken from the landscape. This may include some still life topics. You can also develop your own ideas.

Course aim

To look at aspects of landscape both man made and natural and use various art materials to capture this.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • You will to be willing to try new approaches and techniques.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a better understanding of colour, tone, perspective and proportion.
  • Identify light and shade and how it can contribute to the atmosphere in a landscape.
  • Identify how engagement in an arts course improves my health and well-being.
  • Compare and contrast one's own results with the others in the group and learn from each other.
  • Consider art from an historical context and be aware of other cultures - and learn from them as well.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Many lessons will start with a demonstration to help you with techniques. Step by step worksheets will be provided and source material to work from will be given to help the start of a project. Individual tuition will take place during the lesson.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will provide the bulk of the materials needed but be given plenty of time to obtain what you need. You will be encouraged to share if necessary. An image capture device such as a phone or camera will be very useful in collecting your own ideas.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • You will be encouraged to work from you own experience as much as possible. An awareness of the different art movements and culture s will help you broaden your understanding and technique.

  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
