The Glasgow Style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and "The Four" (seminar)

An extended three-hour cultural studies seminar (with coffee break) discussing Charles Rennie Mackintosh and "The Four" in the context of Liverpool Walker Art Gallery's major exhibition "Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Making the Glasgow Style". Introducing the work of Mackintosh and his fellow Glaswegian artists Margaret and Frances MacDonald, and Herbert MacNair as it developed at the end of the 19th Century and early years of the 20th Century. An opportunity to discuss Mackintosh and The Four's work more generally and share expectations about or reactions to the Walker exhibition. Coffee refreshments will be provided courtesy of WEA Liverpool Branch.

Course aim

An extended cultural studies seminar discussing Liverpool Walker Art Gallery's major exhibition "Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Making the Glasgow Style". Introducing the work of Mackintosh, Margaret and Frances MacDonald, and Herbert MacNair.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • A willingness to take part in the seminar discussion.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and discuss key aspects of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Margaret and Frances MacDonald, and Herbert MacNair.
  • Initially recognise critical approaches to the art being discussed within the context of the Walker exhibition.
  • Begin to evaluate the art being considered within the wider artistic, cultural and contemporary context.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The three-hour seminar will include illustrated tutor presentations in addition to opportunities to ask questions and take part in discussion.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • It will complement the seminar to visit the Walker exhibition either before or after the seminar date.
