The Novels of Sally Rooney (short introductory monthly class)

Explore the two novels to date of exciting Irish writer Sally Rooney: Conversations with Friends (2017) and Normal People (2018). The New Yorker has said of Rooney that she "writes with a rare, thrilling confidence, in a lucid and exacting style", while fellow writer Olivia Laing claims that "Rooney is the best young novelist - indeed one of the best novelists - I've read in years." This two-session course will provide an opportunity to be introduced to and discuss the two novels.

Course aim

This two-session course (meeting monthly) will introduce the two novels to date of Irish writer Sally Rooney and provide an opportunity for critical discussion of the texts.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • An abillity to read the texts to be discussed.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and discuss aspects of the two novels being considered.
  • Develop and analyse critical approaches to the texts being discussed.
  • Undertake - and discuss - informal individual background research on the author and texts being considered.
  • Begin to evaluate the texts being considered within the wider literary, cultural and contemporary context.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring the texts indicated in course description - your own or public library copies. Conversations with Friends is available in paperback and Normal People currently available in hardback will be published in paperback on 2 May 2019.
