What is care work? Pathways taster

If you have wondered what is involved in care work, and whether you need to be a particularly caring person , this is the course which will answer those questions. We will explore the skills which are required, and the skills which you already have. We will look at the range of jobs which are available, and whether they would be of interest to you. This session is a starting point for you to ask the questions, and will no doubt raise more questions! If you are interested in learning more there will be an opportunity to find out where our social care courses are being held next, and if there is to be one near to you.

Course aim

This course is for those who are curious about care work. It offers an overview of what is involved, and the expectations of employers. The learner will do a skills check for themselves, and we will discuss the opportunities available locally.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • A good level of spoken and written English is required We will have group discussion and share our experience.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the skills needed for a range of job roles.
  • Describe the skills which I already have, and consider any development needs.
  • Design an action plan to find out more.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
