The Play's The Thing

Three contrasting plays with the common theme of 'Identity' will be read aloud, analysed and discussed. Aspects include identification of genre as well as literary, historical and social context. We will explore characterisation and touch upon application of vocal techniques in terms of performance.Debate is welcomed. Play copies are supplied. A small contribution towards hire of play sets will be requested.

Course aim

.Aim is to explore the role of dramatic literature in terms of its academic, social and practical application; to familiarise genre, develop vocal performance and extend debate.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course require an ability to read aloud and an interest in discussion.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify genre in three chosen plays
  • Analyse a dramatic structure
  • Have increased insight into characterisation
  • Have increased vocal performance technique
  • Have gained further confidence in discussion

How will I be taught?

  • Teaching methods will employ introductory talk on plays by tutor. Invitation to join in Specific question and answer points. General Discussion.Group Improvisation. Vocal Warm-ups. Encouragement for written inventions based our chosen play by individual students. Theatre 'crits', programmes, etc.,

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Occasional comment from tutor on performances. Readings that went particularly well. Hints on where they could have been further developed with increased confidence.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Maybe having been a theatre visitor would be a useful stimulus
