The Lost City of Ugarit

Ref: C3842989

In 1928 a Syrian farmer unearthed the remains of a building near the Mediterranean coast. Subsequently French archaeologists uncovered the lost ancient city of Ugarit. They also unearthed hundreds of clay tablets in cuneiform script that gave a vivid picture of the life of the city These included a series of texts about its gods such as El and Baal and its goddesses such as Asherah and Anat The language of the texts was akin to biblical Hebrew and the gods mentioned appear very negatively in the biblical picture Now we can hear what the Canaanites themselves thought and believed and catch a glimpse of Late Bronze Age civilisation That civilisation came to an end with the invasion of the Sea Peoples (including the Philistines) sometime around 1200BC as the bronze Age gave way to the Iron Age
