Students will develop the skills to write a range of texts for different purposes, such as stories, reports and letters. They will learn some formats for these texts and explore some of the grammar which is correct for these applications. They will also learn to review and correct their own and others' work.

Course aim

To help students write correct text confidently for a range of purposes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for students who have already participated in a Level 1 ESOL reading course.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of punctuation and sentence structure
  • Identify and use the stages involved in producing a piece of writing (plan, write, review)
  • Production of a piece of writing on a topic to be chosen in class which is correctly laid out, spelled and punctuated.
  • Identify and correct mistakes made during writing.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Students will be expected to complete straightforward tasks outside the classroom (e.g. watching a TV programme, reading a newspaper article) and use this experience in classroom discussions.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • The tutor will provide information, support and feedback at each session to help students progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a pen and some paper to write on.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to ESOL Level 1 accredited course.
