The period 1485-1547 was a tumultuous one for England with a new and insecure Tudor dynasty on the throne Under Henry VII the old medieval structures were maintained but Henry VIII would make a decisive break with the past and the implications would be profound This course examines the state of society and religion at the end of the medieval period, and how the ground was laid for the changes brought about by Henry's break with Rome It will look in detail at the impact of the changes in England and the different positions adopted by members of the court and wider English society

Course aim

The course will explore the social and religious situation under the first two Tudor kings and the transition from the medieval world to the early modern

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the factors in late medieval society which were promoting change in beliefs and outlook
  • Assess the state of religion in England in the early 16th century
  • Assess the religious beliefs of major players such as Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Thomas More and Thomas Cromwell
  • Compare the situation in England with that on the Continent during this period

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
