Wellcome to Forensics

Ref: C3842868

For those interested in forensic science, we will introduce the subject in week one, then cover physical methods (eg DNA profiles; fingerprints; ballistics; trace evidence) for two weeks. This will be followed by two weeks on psychological approaches (eg Eye Witness Testimony; Offender Profiling) and finally we will consider a collection of cases & a particular offender, mostly from the psychological side. Sessions will be interactive with chances to try various techniques.

Course aim

To introduce participants to Forensic Science, strengths and weaknesses. By doing this to demonstrate various scientific methods and principles.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • Students need a level 2 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand what makes something scientific.
  • Understand the strengths and weaknesses of present forensic science.
  • See how science is influenced by its context.
  • See how science has influenced specific criminal investigations.
  • Know that there are a range of possible forensic roles, and get an idea if they would enjoy working in forensics.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • There will be a wide range of materials (videos; articles; etc) and activities that you are encouraged to try a selection of between classes.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • I will keep a record of your involvement in class, and any activities that you choose to do outside (please let me know :) ). I am keen to help anyone decide what they might do following this course.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • If you cannot access the internet then I can provide copies of anything that you want to read or watch (if possible).

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • No previous research is expected, but it may help you enjoy the course more. I hope that you will have seen or read films/tv/books involving forensic methods. (We cover offender profiling as covered in the biographical books by FBI agents, etc.)

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Access the WEA What Next? booklet here http://www.wea.org.uk/learn-wea/what-can-i-do-next
  • This course is an introduction, but I will have a feel for what you might do next whether aimed at a job or at further study. What you might do next will depend on your personal experience.
