An Introduction to Garden Birds (and the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch)

Find out how to make your garden count for wild birds with a day school in central Macclesfield. As well as learning how to identify the top 10 garden birds the course provides background on population trends as well as tips on garden bird care and how to get the most out of taking part in the RSPB's Garden Birdwatch at home.

Course hours will be 10 - 12 and 1-3 with variation on the day subject to agreement with the class. Lunch not provided.

Course aim

To provide students with an understanding of how best to attract wild birds to the garden and identify them. To encourage students to take part in the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch citizen science survey with confidence.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the top ten garden birds.
  • Explain 5 techniques to attract wild birds to my garden.
  • Contribute to the RSPB's annual Big Garden Birdwatch Survey and understand how my results will contribute to the understanding of changes in garden bird populations.
  • Describe two ways in which birdwatching contributes to improved health and well-being.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
