From Saxon to Norman: England 959-1100

The period from 959 to 1100 was a tumultuous one in England. Viking raids began again and the policy of Ethelread the Unready was unsuccessful in repelling them. Between 1016-42 England was ruled by the Danish king Cnut and then by his two sons. The reign of Edward the Confessor was far from stable and on his death there was a three way fight for the crown William the Conqueror emerged as the victor, and he and his son William Rufus set about establishing Norman rule over the Anglo Saxons This course examines the personalities, policies, art and religion of this crucial period in our history

Course aim

The course will explore the history of England during the reigns of the last Anglo Saxon kings and the impact of the Norman invasion of 1066.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the distinctive contributions of each of the kings studied
  • Assess the impact on developments in art and religion in this period
  • Analyse the reasons for the victory of William the Conqueror in 1066
  • Assess the impact of the changes brought about by the Norman Conquest

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
