Calligraphy for Beginners and Improvers

The topic for this term will be the ITALIC hand.We learn it in easy step by step stages with one to one tuition mostly,sometimes in smallgroups.We begin with simple pen patterns & end with writing beautiful texts with capitals & the use of colour.Come on ,impress your friends & family.You do not need expensive materials & equipment.We learn correct pen, hold writing posture,the Letterforms,& the flow & rhythm of writingAllthis will,hopefully lead to some creative work in colour,such as Easter Cards or Poetic items,etc.Improvers will get individual tuition.Some Homework assignments will be given to help progress.

Course aim

The aim will be to create possibilities for learning ways of developing skills in the art of Beautiful Writing,That is Calligraphy,which may lead eventually to a new & absorbing hobby.Calligraphy is a subject within reach of most of us .

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • Calligraphy can be useful to someone who does Cake Decoration,Glass engraving,Embroidery,etc.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write with some skill & confidence The Italic Hand & Capitals
  • Work alongside a friendly group of students Who will be helpful with my learning .,we are all friends here!
  • Create some interesting 'take-home' items such as greeting - cards in colour
  • Learn to write with a square edged nib in ink & paint
  • Discover the theraputic values in doing Calligraphy,you will find it very absorbing as you go on.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Most of the tuition will be on a one to one basis,The tutor will see everyone in turn or in small groupsWe learn in easy stages.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Some creative work using colouring techniques eg.Coloured writing ,coloured backgrounds.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • We have nibs & some holders,& some practice paper.Sheaffer cartridge pens are very good & can be purchased at Rymans stationary stores in Foregate Street,Chester.If using dip pens,Quink ink is acceptable.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • We have a small selection of Calligraphy books in our reference cupboard

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
