Drawing and Painting the Human Figure (Spring Term 2019)

The course provides opportunities to explore a range of approaches and techniques in drawing the human figure , using a variety of drawing and painting materials /techniques -brushstrokes, texture, colour. Build and boost self confidence. Develop observational skills and creative process.

Course aim

To enable those with little or no experience of drawing the human figure to learn and practice the fundamental skills involved. To provide an opportunity for those with experience to renew and practice their skills , and to explore new approaches.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of good proportions.
  • Tackle realistic figure drawing from observation.
  • Identify and apply the principles of shading.
  • Create own palette of skin tones.
  • Begin to evaluate own work and that of others.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Bring your own drawing and painting materials , paper " for warm ups" and an A3 cartridge pad or equivalent for larger work and longer poses. A stand easel and board are essential as there are no tables. If using oils, please use odourless materials.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • If possible familiarize yourself with some of the many different ways of interpreting the human figure, eg. galleries, books, I.T.

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • For the serious artist Life Drawing is drawing for life, it is also the most useful regular practice you can have whatever kind of visual art you make, since it truly teaches you to observe the world around us.
