Join this friendly class held within the community, led by an expert tutor. This course will teach you how to correctly take bodice measurements, draft basic patterns and use a sewing machine to construct a garment. This is a very hands on practical course aiming to progress onto an accredited garment making course, encouraging you to take notes, increase numeracy skills and working independently including conducting various research skills and presenting outcomes to your peers.

Course aim

A bodice and sleeve pattern drafting class starting from the basics of how to correctly take bodice measurements working up to constructing a made to measure garment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Learners need to be able to read, write and speak in English and have completed the beginners sewing course.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Compile a portfolio or work, including written notes, diagrams, calculations, patterns, samples of work.
  • Identify measurements needed to draft basic patterns, correctly take specific bodice measurements and follow the formulas to calculate the final measurements needed to draft a bodice, sleeve and neckline patterns.
  • Draft and label a minimum of three patterns.
  • Primarily construct a bodice toile, identify alterations, amendments needed. Implement these in order to construct a made to measure one piece dress.
  • Research magazines to present a minimum of three different dress designs where a one piece bodice pattern has been used to construct the garment. Share your findings with your peers

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Homework tasks will be set which will include completing independent research.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • There is a £5.00 non refundable contribution charge towards the use of tools and equipment provided on the course

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Completion of the Beginners sewing course is compulsory.
