English Through Art

Explore Alice Kettle's exhibition and use a range of artistic and textile techniques to build your English language and art skills. The course will develop your confidence to try new ways of making art and building your vocabulary to name the materials, techniques and feelings related to your art. It aims to be enjoyable and open to people with little or no art or textile skills.

Course aim

The course aims to use art and textiles to develop skills, improve the use of expressive English, contribute to mental well being and explore the Whitworth Art Gallery.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create three pieces of art using three different techniques, for example collage, embroidery and origami.
  • Learn to write and spell up to 20 new English words to describe the materials and techniques used in the sessions.
  • Write at least five English phrases to describe the art created.
  • Increase well being and confidence.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
