Literature - Enlightening Novels Continued

Ref: C3842710

The novels to be studied this course are: Frankenstein, Mary Shelley; Scoop, Evelyn Waugh; History of the Rain, Niall Williams We will consider each novel in turn and often related poetry, analysing the writer's method. Mindful of critical opinion, we nevertheless will determine our own evaluation of the "truths" presented. If human sympathy and understanding is enlarged by sharing books together then we all become more confident and perceptive readers.

Course aim

To enjoy together a variety of novels and try to appreciate how each "works". We will consider a writer's craft as well as content.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • An enthusiasm for and competence in reading is essential

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify characteristic features of the writing in each novel
  • Give a brief account of the key characters and events in each novel
  • Express and elaborate a preference for one of the 3 novels considered

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Teaching and learning methods will be varied and also attempt to reflect the preferences and skills of the group. Additional supplementary material will frequently be distributed by email for personal consideration

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There are no formal tests or exams. No-one will be obliged to read aloud; everyone is encouraged to join in discussion. Any related individual contributions are welcomed and class enthusiasms pursued.

What else do I need to know?

  • you need to have a copy of each text and bring it with you to class. Use of a kindle is fine.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • A notebook to record your early and evolving Impressions and later notes is desirable but not required. You need each text alone prior to class discussion

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • You could progress to Higher Education courses. Follow link to the PEARL website for information http://pearl.open.ac.uk/
  • Ideally this course will enrich your pleasure and skill in reading texts of relative complexity but real literary merit
