This course will enable the learner to learn basic art techniques and to combine this with experimentation with art media such as block printing and painting to create exciting artworks which express issues related to the environment

Course aim

Students will learn basic art techniques and experiment with printing and mark making to express issues related to the current landscape

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No experience necessary although energy and enthusiasm a must!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use line and tone effectively
  • Create 2 tonal prints to express 2 converse issues
  • Create 2 mixed media effects to express 2 converse issues
  • Discuss selected artwork from a gallery or a book
  • Demonstrate increased confidence and wellbeing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Students encouraged to undertake homework which is discussed at the start of each lesson and constructive criticism given.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Students informed of progress throughout the course and work discussed with the group

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Although there is paper and paint, students may want to bring a pencil and a sketchbook

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Students may want to research artists who have used print and mixed media effects to express issues

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Students may wish to apply for a Foundation course at Stockport College or at The Manchester Colleges
