From Mozart to Robert Schumann this course charts the development and survival of the “tune” in Classical Music, seen through the lens of the Romantic Piano Concerto as it evolves from the time of Mozart through to the Mid-Romantic era.

Course aim

To survey the development of the Romantic Piano Concerto across European Culture in the 50 years from 1791-1841

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • The course is for anybody with a love for and curiosity about Classical Music. No skills are needed.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Begin to understand the cultural currents that have evolved Classical Music since the time of Mozart.
  • 2. Begin to understand the nature of the catastrophic developments that ripped Classical Music apart in the 20th Century and how this started in the 1820’s.
  • 3. Begin to understand the effect of music on your emotions and your body.
  • 4. Begin to understand the effect that music has on the wider world.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • A notebook, pen, listening ear and open mind.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Reading the latest issues of Gramophone Magazine or BBC Music will provide stimulating articles for discussion in the group.
