Rise Like Lions! A Study of Shelley's Poem.

A five week learning experience from the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) in association with the People’s History Museum (PHM). In response to the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote The Masque of Anarchy. This course will study the poem with the famous lines; ‘Rise Like Lions!’ and ‘We Are Many! They Are Few!’ Led by Mark Krantz, WEA tutor and author of Rise Like Lions: The History and Lessons of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819, each session will involve a presentation of material followed by an interactive discussion. This course will look at: • the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 • the life of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley • the meaning of the poem The Masque of Anarchy • a study of the poem in history • its use and relevance today This course includes a visit to PHM’s main galleries and Labour History Archive & Study Centre to examine the relevant materials.

Course aim

In the bicentenary of the Peterloo Massacre this course will examine the life of Percy Byssh Shelly and his epic poem The Masque of Anarchy that he wrote as a response to the events at Peterloo

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • A preparedness to examine the text of the poem will be needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Better understand the meaning of the poem
  • Recall key events in the life of the poet
  • Quote key lines from the poem

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Held at the People's History Museums this course includes a visit to the galleries and access to resources and archives

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Some knowledge of what happened at the Peterloo Massacre will be needed to fully appreciate the meaning of the poem
