Using and Enjoying French

Extend your skills of speaking, reading, listening to and understanding French for use in practical everyday situations, as well as exploring French culture such as its history, geography, fashion, food and music. Our course is carried out in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Course aim

This course will further the student's skills in speaking, reading, listening to and understanding French in practical everyday situations.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe symptoms of an illness or details of an accident to a doctor or at a hospital.
  • Use or hire a car in France and be familiar with motoring signs and situations.
  • Interact socially with French people using appropriate greetings and formalities, make, accept or politely decline invitations etc.
  • Discuss aspects of French culture including its history, geography, food, wines, music and customs.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Requirements are a notepad, a ring binder or lever arch file and a textbook (to be detailed on week 1).

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
