Calligraphy for Beginners and Improvers

..Calligraphy is a skill within reach of most of us.Wecan learn it in easy step by step stages with one to one tuition.Improve your writing skills starting with holding the pen correctly to learning the flow & rhythms of writing.Have a go,don't be shy!This can lead to some creative work in colour eg.Christmas Cards.Advanced learners will work on their personal projects with tutor help,whilst others may wish to do some illustration in black & white or colour.

Course aim

CALLIGRAPHY,The art of Beautiful Writing,is within reach of most of us & can be learnt in fewer tha 8 weeks under careful one to one tuition.You will be taught in stages ending producing some creative item such as your own Christmas Card

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • CALLIGRAPHY can be useful as an aid or addition to other crafts & creative activity

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write to a reasonable standard
  • Use a square edged nib with a reasonable degree of skill & confidence
  • Develop skills with layout & spacing
  • Create a small personal project eg.Christmas Card.
  • Work in Colour-Backgrounds,Decoration,Writing.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Teaching will be on a one to one & small group basis.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • We have a good selection of Calligraphy books in our reference cupboard

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Further Calligraphy courses will continue in January 2019 .Membership of the North West Calligraphers Association,with monthly meetings at Port Sunlight doing Calligraphy Workshops with visiting Experts.
