On the Audio Portrait's course you will create still and moving images, audio and text to produce short compelling stories all made on a mobile phone. You will be using a combination of photography, video, audio and text in order to produce your portrait. We will take our inspiration from exhibitions at Tate Liverpool and will discuss, develop and storyboard ideas about the city we live in and how this affects and shapes our lives.This is a practical course which uses photography, video making, audio interviews and other digital story telling methods to create a finished piece.

Course aim

Audio Portraits: Tales from the City, will incorporate still and moving images, audio, sound design and text in order to produce short compelling stories all made on a smart phone.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • How to take better photographs and video footage using your mobile phone camera.
  • How to interview and record quality audio into a mobile phone.
  • How to manage and storyboard your project and incorporate it into a group theme.
  • How to mix images, video footage, audio recordings and text to create a short film in the form of an MP4.
  • How to upload your completed audio portrait to social media as part of a larger group piece.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A mobile phone and earphones. You'll need to download several free mobile phone apps including Kine-Master, Snap-Seed and a voice recording app. You will need a USB stick or a cloud account such as Google Drive, Microsoft One Drive, or Drop Box.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • After completion of this course you will be able to progress onto several other digital media courses such as Documentary Film Making. Please check the WEA website or have a chat with your tutor.
