Introduction to Driving Theory

Ref: C3841821

Come along and find out more about what you need to learn to pass the theory test.

Course aim

This course aims to give students an understanding of the main requirements of the driving theory test. This course alone will not be sufficient for students to pass the theory test.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre
  • Students need to have English at E2 level or above. Students should have basic computer skills (mouse skills , basic internet search skill). Students should have or be intending to apply for a provisional driving license.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Students will be able to identify the colours and shapes used in road signs and specifically identify 6 signs
  • Students will understand what hazard awareness is and identify a developing hazard from a clip
  • Identofy four types of vulnerable road user and describe the extra care necessary to be taken
  • Understand and explain the different elements of the driving theory test.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Some classes may include going outside to observe road signs and markings and traffic behaviour.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • It would be useful for students to have access to a hard copy of the Highway Code and/or Know your road signs books or access to these documents on the internet.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Students may feel more confident to continue studying for the theory test, to apply for their provisional driving license and start driving lessons. Having a driving license could lead to greater independence and job opportunities.
