Beginners Garment Making

Join this small friendly class held within the community, led by an expert tutor. This course will teach you how to take bodice measurement to draft a skirt pattern and use a sewiing machine to construct made to measure garments. This is a very hands on practical course aiming to introduce you to garment construction, whilst increasing your knowlege of design lines, skills and techniques used in the fashion industry.

Course aim

Introduction to basic pattern drafting and garment making with an insight to developing made to measure garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre
  • Basic level of English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify a minimum of ten items of tools/equipment used in Garment Construction
  • Carry out specific personal measurements and calculate these correctly to draft a six panel skirt pattern
  • Draft and label a 6 panel skirt pattern
  • Use a sewing machine correctly and safely to construct a garment
  • State at least two ways coming on this course has improved your health and well being

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Photographic evidence will be taken of you and your work for assessment/evidence purposes

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A £5.00 non refundable contribution is payable towards the use of pattern drafting and garment making equipment needed. All materials, haberdashery etc will be provided by the learner

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • You may be asked to research certain designs of the paticular garments that will be taught in class
