In the year 800 Anglo Saxon England was flourishing, but it was about to be struck by Viking raids which destroyed almost all the existing kingdoms Only Alfred's Wessex held out and under him and his dynasty a new united England would be created But the Danes came back under Cnut in the early 11th century and the last Anglo Saxon king Harold II would die at the hands of the Normans in 1066 at Hastings This course examines the social, political and religious aspects of this turbulent period

Course aim

The course covers the period of English history from 800-1100 concentrating on the changes that took place in late Anglo Saxon England as a result of the impact of first the Viking and then the Norman invasions

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Evaluate the impact of the Vikings in the 9th-10th centuries
  • Asses the significance of the role played by Alfred the Great
  • Read excerpts in modern English from the Anglo Saxon Chronicle
  • Discuss in class the roles and characters of kings like Cnut, Edward the Confessor and William the Conqueror
  • Asses the changes brought about by the Norman Conquest

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students may like to do follow up reading in books or on websites

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
