What is the difference between teaching Phonics and teaching the Alphabet? The difference between spelling and sounding out? How and when do your children learn to read at school. How, when and which sounds and letters are your children introduced to at school? This taster session will answer all these questions and will help you better understand your children's reading journey at school from an early age.

Course aim

This taster session will give you an idea of what phonics is and why your children learn it at school.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Any parents who have young children and want to learn how their children are taught Phonics.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the difference between Phonics and Spelling.
  • Understand how your children start to learn how to read and write.
  • Understand what 'Jolly Phonics' is and why schools use it.
  • Recognise 1-2 of the basic skills of reading and writing.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
