This beginners' course will introduce students to using Microsoft Office: using Word to make documents look professional, Excel spreadsheets to do simple calculations, use the internet to research and complete application forms online, learn how to attach documents to emails and upload CVs to job websites. The course will also include 2 sessions learning about using public computers in the library, and possibly delivering CVs to local businesses.

Course aim

To increase students' confidence and skills using computers when applying for jobs.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use Word to create or improve a CV, complete an application form and write a letter
  • Use the Internet to find job vacancies, research a company and a plan a route to a job interview
  • Create an email account (or use existing one), request job application packs by email and send CVs as an email enclosure
  • Use Excel spreadsheets to complete simple calculations

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
