Suitable for men and women wanting to learn at S/L beginner level all types of plant care and propagation while having opportunities to work with a range of tools on garden maintenance projects suitable to the individual's ability. Learning with support to become a good all round gardener.

Additional information about this course

This course is run by the WEA, working in partnership with East Surrey College delivering Adult Learning across the East Surrey area. This is a fee paying course. If you are in receipt of an income related benefit you may be entitled to free tuition.

Course aim

To provide health and well-being for supported learner students through gardening, friendships, plant knowledge, horticulture and a closeness to nature. The 4 hour session allowing time for a wider range of tasks

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Support staff will be expected and ready to work actively along side the client/students whilst undertaking both inside and outside tasks

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create new plants through cuttings and by division.
  • Monitor the growth of the new plants and care for existing plants
  • Identify at least 5 summer plants used in our displays
  • Take part in a number of appropriate garden maintenance tasks
  • Safely use a variety of garden tools, clean and return to store after use.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • The end of session diary will record your tasks and progress each session

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Suitable and appropriate clothing for all weathers, personal and well fitting gardening or latex gloves A packed lunch

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Gardeners are encouraged to take a gardening magazine and to watch suitable and subject specific TV programmes and to take opportunities to visit gardens.
