Suitable for men and women wanting to learn at S/L beginner level all types of plant care and propagation while having opportunities to work with a range of tools on garden maintenance projects suitable to the individual's ability. Learning with support to become a good all round gardener.

Additional information about this course

This course is run by the WEA, working in partnership with East Surrey College delivering Adult Learning across the East Surrey area. This is a fee paying course. If you are in receipt of an income related benefit you may be entitled to free tuition.

Course aim

To provide health and well-being for supported learner students through gardening, friendships, plant knowledge, horticulture and a closeness to nature. The 4 hour session allowing time for a wider range of tasks

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create new plants through division and cuttings
  • Monitor care and growth of existing and new plants
  • Identify at least 5 summer plants from our displays.
  • undertake a range of appropriate garden maintenance tasks.
  • Safely use a variety of appropriate garden tools, returning them clean to store.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Support staff are expected to work alongside and support their clients throughout. athey will need appropriate clothing especially shoes and gardening gloves.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • The end of session diary will help you record your progress and tasks.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • Appropriate gardening clothing for all weathers. Gardening gloves or latex gloves. A packed lunch.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Looking through gardening books or magazines, garden visits, plant centre and garden centre visits
