An opportunity for men and women wanting to learn at Supported Learner beginner level all types of plant care and propagation while having opportunities to work with a range of tools on garden maintenance projects suitable to the individual's ability. Learning with support to become a good all round gardener while taking gentle exercise and getting closer to the natural world.

Additional information about this course

This course is run by the WEA, working in partnership with East Surrey College delivering Adult Learning across the East Surrey area. This is a fee paying course. If you are in receipt of an income related benefit you may be entitled to free tuition.

Course aim

To provide health and well-being for supported learner students through gardening, friendships, plant knowledge, horticulture and a closeness to nature.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • Support staff will be expected and ready to work actively along side the client/students whilst undertaking both inside and outside tasks

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Propagate new plants by cuttings or/ and division
  • Monitor the care and growth of the new plants
  • Identify at least 5 plants from our summer displays
  • Take part in a number of appropriate garden maintenance tasks
  • Safely use a selection of suitable and appropriate garden tools, returning them clean to the store

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • The end of session diary will record your tasks and progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • Suitable gardening clothing for work inside and out in all weathers. Well fitting gardening gloves or latex gloves.
