This course will help you to improve and develop confidence in your reading before you progress on to a Functional Skills English qualification at a later date. The course will focus on reading for meaning, reading to gain information from texts as well as identifying the purpose of different texts. The course will also focus on recognising signs and symbols found in everyday situations and you will also practise using basic punctuation. Throughout the course, you will build-up a portfolio of work completed in the classroom and complete short assessment tasks.

Course aim

This course will help you to develop reading skills and prepare for a Functional Skills English qualification.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise 8 different signs and symbols seen in the local area
  • Identify commas and apostrophes in 5 short texts
  • Locate 5 pieces of information from 10 different texts
  • Identify the intended audience of 10 different texts
  • Identify 10 words commonly found within a specific context

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, working in pairs, class discussions, short tasks and research

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
