Duration: 2 hour Hand Drumming and Percussion playing /free style/ including using the voice as an instrument. Also encourage participants/learners to bring along any kind of hand drum or percussion instrument to join in with the session that makes a sound or can be adapted to create a percussion sound and have a go at making a simple shake percussion instrument out of re-cycled materials

Course aim

To create percussion sounds from hand drums and percussion and hand held instruments. Encouraging the students to have a go at creating their own sounds

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To explore their own development and learning a new skill
  • Be able to engage with other students in a positive way, while in the session
  • Gain confidence in themselves by learning how to make sound and join in with others
  • To have fun and be able to express themselves through sound, which helps to improve over all health and well being of the student

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • - The students have some hand held percussion / buckets for the sessions, which they have access to . these are kept at the Minstead day centre, so they can get them out to have a play between the course if the choose too

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • All resources will be provided but if the students want to bring and share any of their own,hand held/drum instruments, they are free to do so

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • The students will have the opportunity to engaged in other / workshop /activities at the WEA centres and out reach tutoring and they will continue to be both during and following the sessions.
