Come and learn what family history is all about. How do you find out the facts? How do you add colour to these facts and check whether your family stories are true? Is there more that you can find out about your ancestors and their lives? This course is for beginners and will get you excited about creating your own family tree.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to family history

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain the process of researching family history
  • Explain the main sources that I need to find
  • Explain the ethical considerations involved
  • Make a start on my own family history
  • Help other people research their family trees

How will I be taught?

  • There will be a presentation and an opportunity to ask questions.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have the opportunity to discuss your learning with the tutor and ask further questions afterwards.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please talk to other family members who might have more information. Ask them about their memories, and see if they have documents or photos they can share with you.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
