On this short course, we will practise activities in poetry and prose that will help us think about description, character and structuring a longer piece of writing. We will also take a serious look at playfulness.

Course aim

This course will focus on writing more descriptively in poetry and prose, and on how to plan a longer piece of prose, such as a novel.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for writers with spoken and written English, so that they can get the most out of the course.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Take part in group discussions on creative writing, including giving peer feedback
  • Write a prosimetric form
  • Apply the principles of plotting to a story idea
  • Make up words and phrases of your own in 'nonsense' writing
  • Carry on writing beyond the course, including in a journal

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a notebook and working pen or pens.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
